PH AIRPORT LINK GROUNDWARER PUMP INVESTIGATION

Transurban Airport Link Tunnel Groundwater Pump Major Refurbishment Investigation — strategy to reduce the frequency of failure of existing pump assets.

Project Overview

Transurban Airport Link Tunnel Groundwater Pump Major Refurbishment Investigation

This assessment of groundwater, stormwater and transfer pump assets on the Transurban Airport Link tunnel (APL) was undertaken to determine a strategy to reduce the frequency of failure of the existing pumps.

The scope of this investigation included groundwater pumps in the Transurban’s Airport Link tunnel at the following locations:

  • Bowen Hills Pump Station
  • Bowen Hills VSO Pump Station
  • Kedron Pump Station
  • Toombul Pump Station

The pump stations were commissioned when the airport link tunnel was completed in 2012. The water pumping system has operated as designed since being commissioned, however there have been a higher than expected number of failures of various types in the pump system.

Crucible’s investigation researched and summarised the root cause of the ongoing failures, evaluated the current condition of the pumps, identified opportunities for improvement in the pump operation and maintenance regime, and identified and evaluated measures to reduce the failure frequency.

01

Pump System Failure Modes Assessment

Comprehensive research and analysis of root causes behind the higher-than-expected failure rates across all four pump stations in the Airport Link tunnel.

02

Operational Rectification Strategies

Development and evaluation of targeted strategies to improve pump operation and maintenance regimes, reducing failure frequency and extending asset life.
